Stilbaai

"Stilbaai – Bay of Sleeping Beauty, South Africa" - Where the Goukou River meets the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, the coastal town of Stilbaai rests quietly along South Africa's southern shoreline. Known as the Bay of Sleeping Beauty, it is a place shaped by water, light and an extraordinary sense of stillness. The river winds gently towards the sea while the surrounding fynbos forms part of the remarkable Cape Floral Kingdom, creating a landscape where the richness of the natural world is never far from view.

There is something particularly peaceful about Stilbaai. The meeting of river and ocean creates a landscape of subtle contrasts—fresh water and salt water, movement and stillness, land and sea. The neighbouring communities of Jongensfontein and Melkhoutfontein form part of this quiet coastal region, where life remains closely connected to the rhythms of the natural environment.

Beneath this apparent tranquillity lies a much older story. Stilbaai is home to archaeological evidence of human life stretching back thousands of years, including ancient fish traps associated with the early Khoi people of the Southern Cape. Along the coast, a shell midden dating to approximately 1000 BC provides another quiet reminder that people have gathered here for generations, drawn to the abundance offered by the river and sea.

The landscape therefore carries more than beauty. It carries memory.

James 1:6

“But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.”

The words of James bring another dimension to the meeting of land and water. The sea is never entirely still. Its surface changes with the wind, the tide and the light, yet beneath that movement lies something deeper and constant. Faith can be much the same—not the absence of uncertainty, but the decision to remain anchored when circumstances shift around us.

This image was photographed in Stilbaai using a Pentax 645N medium format camera with Kodak Professional Ektar 100 film. Ektar is known for its exceptionally fine grain, rich colour and remarkable sharpness, qualities that lend themselves naturally to the vivid landscapes of the Southern Cape. The analogue negative preserves the subtle transitions between water, vegetation and sky with a depth and character that is distinctly photographic.

There is a particular quality to film that digital capture does not reproduce. Its organic rendering of colour, light and texture gives the photograph a sense of permanence while retaining the atmosphere of the moment in which it was made.

Stilbaai – Bay of Sleeping Beauty is a quiet portrait of a remarkable coastal landscape, where ancient history, natural abundance and the restless movement of the ocean exist together. It invites the viewer to slow down, to consider the passage of time, and to find stillness even within the movement of the world.

This is a signed and embossed Open Edition print.

The Collections

Every collection represents years of exploration, patience and careful craftsmanship. Some photographs are captured digitally, while others originate on traditional photographic film.

Film photographs are developed by hand before being scanned using professional equipment. Digital RAW files receive only careful tonal and colour refinement, preserving the integrity of the original photograph.

Collections are available as either Open Editions or Limited Editions, depending on the artwork.

The Triptych Collection Sizes

Triptych Size Guide

For Triptych Collection artworks, the selected size applies consistently across all three panels.

In compositions where the side panels are portrait and the centre panel is landscape, the selected size refers to the maximum height of the artwork. For example, when A3 is selected, the two portrait side panels are produced to the A3 long dimension, and the centre landscape panel is scaled proportionally to match that same height.

Where all three panels are landscape or all three are portrait, the selected format remains consistent throughout the set — A0 is A0, A1 is A1, A2 is A2 and A3 is A3. Sizes are not mixed between panels.

Available Triptych Collection sizes: A0, A1, A2 and A3.

The Editions

Limited Editions

Limited Editions are permanently restricted to 25 prints worldwide, regardless of the size or medium selected.

Once the edition has sold out, no additional prints of that artwork will ever be produced.

Signing & Numbering

Every Open and Limited Edition print is individually signed, embossed and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

Each Limited Edition print is hand-numbered—for example: 10/25

This indicates the tenth print produced from a total edition of twenty-five.

The Photographic Process

Many CFP Prints artworks begin with traditional photographic film.

Each negative or transparency is developed by hand using carefully selected chemistry before being professionally scanned for printing. Every stage of the workflow is managed with the objective of faithfully reproducing the original photograph rather than digitally transforming it.

Every photograph represents a real moment, captured through experience, patience and light—not artificial intelligence.
