Ghostly Movements

"Ghostly Movements – Augrabies Falls, South Africa" - unveils its most haunting beauty in Pinhole waterfall photography, a black and white large-format pinhole image captured from the viewing deck above Augrabies Falls on South Africa’s mighty Orange River. During a summer flood season, I exposed this scene for 6 minutes and 5 seconds on ADOX CHS 100 II film, allowing the thunderous cascade to become a silken veil and the lone observer to drift into a spectral form.

Isaiah 43:19-21

Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert. The beast of the field will honour Me, The jackals and the ostriches, Because I give waters in the wilderness And rivers in the desert, To give drink to My people, My chosen. This people I have formed for Myself; They shall declare My praise.

This work draws its spiritual resonance from Isaiah 43:19–21: Behold, I will do a new thing… I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert… They shall declare My praise.”

At “Aukoerebis”—the Khoi name for this “Place of Great Noise”—the falls carve an 18 km abyss through sheer granite rock. Here, water becomes both wilderness and worship. The long pinhole exposure transforms the torrent into a fluid hymn, while the man on the deck, barely holding still, becomes a ghostly witness to nature’s new thing in the desert.

Augrabies Falls National Park lies just minutes from Upington, yet it feels like an otherworldly realm where divine promise meets geological grandeur. The 5×7 pinhole camera’s inherent softness and vignetting lend the image an antique patina, while the ADOX CHS 100 II film’s fine grain and tonal separation preserve every nuance—from cloud-streaked sky to swirling mist. Pinhole cameras are perfectly imperfect!

In Ghostly Movements, the falls are no longer merely a spectacle; they are a living testimony to renewal. Isaiah’s promise of rivers in the desert finds its mirror in the silky waters that once breached the flooded deck. The ghost of the man—caught between moments of stillness and motion—echoes the call to praise, to stand in awe before a new thing unfolding.

This signed and embossed Limited Edition print series is ideal for collectors drawn to pinhole waterfall photography that marries technical mastery with spiritual depth. Whether displayed in a gallery or a refined interior, it invites the viewer to linger in the interplay of time, movement, and light.

Ghostly Movements stands as both art and altar—a place where film, faith, and force of nature converge to declare praise.

This is a signed and embossed Limited Edition print, strictly limited to just 25 pieces, ensuring its exclusivity.

Every collection represents years of exploration, patience and careful craftsmanship. Some photographs are captured digitally, while others originate on traditional photographic film.

Film photographs are developed by hand before being scanned using professional equipment. Digital RAW files receive only careful tonal and colour refinement, preserving the integrity of the original photograph.

Collections are available as either Open Editions or Limited Editions, depending on the artwork.

Limited Editions

Limited Editions are permanently restricted to 25 prints worldwide, regardless of the size or medium selected.

Once the edition has sold out, no additional prints of that artwork will ever be produced.

Signing & Numbering

Every Limited Edition print is individually signed, embossed and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

Each print is hand-numbered—for example: 10/25

This indicates the tenth print produced from a total edition of twenty-five.

Many CFP Prints artworks begin with traditional photographic film.

Each negative or transparency is developed by hand using carefully selected chemistry before being professionally scanned for printing. Every stage of the workflow is managed with the objective of faithfully reproducing the original photograph rather than digitally transforming it.

Every photograph represents a real moment, captured through experience, patience and light—not artificial intelligence.
