"Rising Up From The Deep – Is Anybody Out There?" - High above the Breede Valley, almost at the summit of the mountain, the landscape begins to disappear beneath a rising sea of cloud. Rising Up From The Deep – Is Anybody Out There? looks across the winter landscape of Worcester from a vantage point above the valley, where the snow-covered mountains stand in the distance and clouds rise from far below, swirling upwards through the mountain passes.
A radio mast stands prominently in the foreground—a small but unmistakable sign of human presence against an immense and elemental landscape. Its purpose is communication, and yet surrounded by mountains, snow and cloud, it takes on another character. It becomes a question posed to the vastness beyond: Is anybody out there?
The scene was photographed during winter in the mountains surrounding Worcester, just a few kilometres from home. From this elevation, the familiar Breede Valley is transformed. The mountains disappear beneath the cloud, while the peaks beyond remain exposed, their slopes covered in fresh snow. Deep below, the cloud seems to have its own life, rising from the valley floor and curling upwards around the mountains.
There is a remarkable sense of movement in the image. The snow-covered mountain appears still and distant, while the cloud below is constantly shifting and climbing. Between them stands the radio mast, reaching upwards into the changing atmosphere—a structure designed to send signals across the very landscape that now seems almost unreachable.
Job 37:6–7
For He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth’;
Likewise to the gentle rain and the heavy rain of His strength.
He seals the hand of every man,
That all men may know His work.
The words of Job give the scene its deeper meaning. Snow, rain, cloud and mountain are not merely weather and geography; they become evidence of something greater. The verse speaks of God's command over the elements and of the way creation itself can draw our attention beyond what we can see.
Standing almost at the summit, looking down into the cloud and across towards the snow-covered peaks, that sense of scale becomes difficult to ignore. The radio mast may represent humanity's desire to communicate, to reach beyond ourselves and to ask whether we are heard. Yet the mountains and the rising cloud provide a different kind of answer—not through words, but through presence.
Winter is my favourite season in this part of the country. The Brandwacht Mountains and Audenberg Peak rise above the 1,000-metre snowline, and when winter weather arrives, the familiar landscape becomes something altogether different. Snow, mist and cloud reveal a more dramatic and contemplative character in the mountains surrounding Worcester.
Rising Up From The Deep – Is Anybody Out There? is therefore both a landscape photograph and a quiet question. It is about communication, isolation, scale and the human instinct to look upwards and ask what lies beyond.
