The Film Collection

You might wonder why Craig chooses to shoot with film. There is a certain beauty to it that he finds captivating. Film has a nice level of latitude, which allows him to capture interesting and subtle details in the shadows or in front of a bright light source. Additionally, grain gives it a unique texture that is both beautiful and authentic, while digital noise is just ugly. The film medium is also well-designed to capture accurate skin tones, making it ideal for portraiture as well.

The way he sees the world is best represented through the lens of either his 35mm format and 120/medium format film TLR (Twin Lens Reflex) or sheet film cameras or his digital cameras. The extreme clarity of traditional film allows him to capture every detail in the scene just as it was. The rich colors and tones of film enable him to express his vision powerfully. Craig also appreciates the simple and straightforward process of taking a shot without having to read a thick technical manual of the modern digital camera. It allows him to slow down, think abbout the shot, to be old school and to think outside the box, applying all his knowledge of photography to achieve the best results. He learns from his surroundings, using mountains, valleys, deserts, seascapes, and people as his classroom. To get the most out of his shots, he understands how certain films respond to different lighting conditions. There are no back-of-the-camera previews with film, and needs to get it right the first time, every time! Film is a one shot exeperience. After many years of photography, Craig finally learned to process and print all his photographs traditionally in the darkroom. Witnessing his images come to life on paper is truly a remarkable experience!

Through this wonderful medium of film, Craig invites you to join him on his journey and see the natural world and life in all its forms through his eyes, as he has captured it on film. Craig shoots both 35mm and 120/medium format film in 645, 6×6, 6×7, 6×9, 6×12 and 6×17, as well as large format in 4×5″, 4×10″, 5×7″, and 8×10″.
